🌾 Baking with Whole Wheat + Freshly Milled Grains

Hi, Reader,

Is your social media feed filled with people milling their own grains or is it just me??

I got my first electric grain mill last year, and have been playing with it often. It's not too big of a swap, but it definitely requires a little know-how to get the best results.

If you're into home milling (or want to be), I have a Beginner's Guide to Milling Flour on the blog that goes into all of the details you need to get started.

Whole Wheat Recipes

Below, I've gathered a bunch of my favorite whole wheat recipes. Some are made with freshly milled grains while others can use regular store-bought whole wheat.

Using store-bought WW can be a great way to get started! There are still key differences between store-bought whole wheat and fresh milled, so they aren't exactly interchangeable in every situation.

It's best to use the flour recommended in the recipe for the best results. You'll see that noted by adding FMF to the title in the relevant links below. FMF stands for "freshly milled flour."

P.S. I started another blog exclusively about fresh milling called Freshly Milled Grains. It's still small, but I plan on expanding it with lots of recipes this fall!

Moving Beyond Recipes

Lately, I've been reflecting on where I started with this blog. If you're not familiar, I started Milk Glass Home & Kitchen back in 2020, but it was just one of many blogs I started over the years!

The name comes from my passion for collecting antiques and vintage pieces, particularly milk glass at the time.

I wanted to spotlight how we set up our first home with thrifted and thoughtful pieces, refinishing furniture and making things ourselves.

I wanted to layer in my passions of gardening, cooking, and baking, but over time, I really focused in on the food part of the equation.

It seemed like people really just wanted recipes for the most part, and I enjoy them, too! It's fun developing recipes, shooting them, and sharing them with others.

But part of me feels like maybe it's possible for some of that initial passion to come back in. I've dabbled with it in the past and always feel like it seems "off topic," but I do believe this way of living aligns with my mission of slow living.

This is a bit long and maybe only a few of you will read this, but I'd love to know what you think!

Would you also want to know about this sort of lifestyle content - collecting, refinishing, and decorating - or does it make more sense to focus on just food and seasonal slow living?

Hi, Reader, Happy Labor Day weekend! It doesn't feel even remotely possible that it's already the end of August, but here we are. Tomorrow is the first day of September, and I personally cannot wait. It always feels like a breath of relief after the busy, chaotic heat of the summer! But yesterday, my friend Hannah and I hosted a party that was a breath of fresh air in and of itself. She mentioned the idea of an outdoor reading party a couple of months ago, and I was sold. What a great way to...

Hi, Reader, How are these long last days of August treating you? It's funny...as a blogger, I have a whole schedule for sending emails and talking about just the right topics, but right now, I feel like I need to step out of it and talk about something else. (Don't worry - I'll share recipes and helpful links below, too). I'm exhausted right now, and I wonder if you might be feeling the same. There's just so much going on, my to-do list seems piled higher than ever before, and I literally...

Hi, Reader, It is blackberry season here in Western Washington! The edges of our fields and forests are COVERED with invasive blackberry brambles (plus some of the native ones, too). Although it isn't exactly a good thing...it does happen to be a delicious thing. Every summer, my husband and I usually pick 4-6 gallons of blackberries to wash, dry, and freeze for winter cobblers and muffins. They're basically free food! But, there is nothing quite as lovely as coming back with buckets of...
