Hi, Reader, With the cooler temperatures, this is the PERFECT time to turn on the oven and bake something warm and cozy! On the weekends, I feel like I have the oven going all the time. If I'm already paying to heat it once for a batch of bread or roasted vegetables, why not get the most of that energy? I usually start with whatever bakes at the highest temperature, like roasting vegetables or baking a nice, crusty loaf of sourdough. Then I drop the heat to 350 F and bake scones, cookies, sandwich bread, egg casseroles, a pan of lasagna, etc. As the oven is cooling down, you can also roast nuts to make hazelnut or pecan butter, a batch of granola, etc. You can even use the LOWEST oven setting to dry out orange slices, herbs, and more. Once I'm all done baking, I open the oven door to release the heat into the house. It's especially nice and night when the temperatures drop! Is that a lot? Yes. Do I do it like this every time I bake? No, but if you already *know* you're going to make those things, it's easiest to just do them all at once! Cozy Winter Baking ProjectsIf you need some ideas on what to bake this weekend, give these a peek! I'm sure you'll find something fun to try. :) This is our go-to sandwich bread! It's so soft and tender, makes the best toast, and one batch makes two loaves. Blue Cheese Scones With Pear and Walnut Might sound a little bit funny, but TRUST ME, these are lovely! Fresh Milled Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies Made with 100% whole grains, these chewy chocolate chip cookies have way more fiber than regular cookies but definitely don't taste like it! Flavored with my homemade cardamom extract and cardamom sugar, these scones are a celebration of the aromatic, citrusy spice. Tender, moist, and FULL of apple pieces, this cinnamon apple cake is a constant winner for us. We would gladly eat it every week! Flaky Date Scones with Orange and Walnut I know they may not sound that great, but even with my sweet tooth, these are one of my FAVORITE recipes on the blog. They're minimally sweetened and have chewy pops of sweet dates, crunchy walnuts, and just enough orange zest. A little sprinkle of sugar on top tips them towards the sweeter side of things. Lovely! Is gingerbread only for Christmas? This honey-sweetened gingerbread recipe lets the spices shine even more than traditional gingerbread thanks to the mellow sweetness of honey. They're also tender, chewy, and completely irresistible...Ask me how I know. If you have some sourdough discard on hand, add it to my trusted cornbread recipe! It makes the cornbread slightly sweeter and more tender. Perfect for serving with chili! These tender, chewy pear butter cookies have the best texture and the most delicious pop of concentrated pear butter flavor. I absolutely love them! We love eggnog and think it deserves a little more attention beyond the holiday season. These scones are made with eggnog in the dough and the glaze. Aren't they pretty, too? |

Hey, Reader, Happy Spring! What does it look like in your neck of the woods? We just got back from a drizzly stroll in the woods here and I know some of my readers are still dealing with snow. The first of my new patch of daffodils just opened the other day - right on time for the equinox. I check it every morning to see how it's doing and can't wait to see the season unfold! I've also been baking up a storm! The spring flavors are so exciting, and it feels nice to have a plate of freshly...
Hey, there! Are you seeing signs of spring in your neck of the woods? It felt like winter was never going to end, and then one day, I noticed I could hear the frogs croaking while I was throwing the ball for my dog at the park. Then I realized the birds were going wild, chirping and singing in the woods. And then I started to notice flowers emerging. Last fall, we had to tear out two dead bushes from our front yard, and planted dozens of daffodils and tulips. The flower bulbs have started to...
Hey, there, Especially if you’re living on a budget, you need a well-stocked pantry. It’s a vital safety net during challenging times and literally everyone should have at least a few basic staples on hand at all times.
